First Day of South Jersey Service a Double Header!

Students had the choice of volunteering at the United Methodist Community of Collingswood, or helping St. Mary’s Episcopal Church of Haddon Heights prepare for the local March of Our Lives, which it is co-sponsoring tomorrow. Student bloggers weigh in on each activity.

United Methodist Community of Collingswood
Today we went to the UM retirement home in Collingswood and spent time with the residents there. The day started with making Easter cards for the tenants then delivering them. When delivering the cards,  we also got to bring birthday balloons to a few special people who were celebrating today. Lastly, we got a chance to play bingo with a few residents.

St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Haddon Heights
At St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, they were planning a march regarding the recent gun violence and school shootings, more specifically the shooting in Parkland, Florida. They planned to make 17 coffins with each of the victim’s names on it to represent their deaths. Their goal was to honor those who had lost their lives during the tragic shooting, and to remember their lives in a positive light. An estimated 700 people have preregistered for the march, but the numbers could easily rise into the thousands. Our part in helping creating the coffins not only helped lift a weight of of their shoulders, but also left a positive mark from MFS.
