Historical tour of San Juan (and more beach time!)

Today we woke up at 5:45 am to go watch the sunrise. We arrived at the beach at 6:10, and we walked on the beach. We continued onto a path that took us up to an ocean overlook; we watched the waves crash against the rocks. We walked back to the house and ate breakfast; we ate French toast, sausage, and egg cakes. We then dispersed and got ready for a tour in San Juan. Our tour guide Danny took us around around San Juan, showing us some historical monuments: the oldest church in the Western Hemisphere, La Casa Estrecha (The Narrow House, the narrowest residence in Puerto Rico), El Morro, and the Governor’s mansion. We ate lunch around noon at Restaurante Raíces; meals included chicken and rice, fish tacos, pork, and skirt steak. We continued our day by doing some souvenir shopping. We got back on the bus, arrived back to the Big Yellow House, and got dressed for beach time. We swam, tanned, played spikeball, football, and frisbee for a couple of hours. A group of kids went for another hike, while the rest went back to the house. We ate dinner, which was pork, chicken, rice, and salad. After some time for ourselves, we gathered together to watch a movie about how Puerto Rico is becoming more sustainable so they don’t have to rely on other countries. Students then dispersed to go play some poker or go to sleep. Tomorrow our service project begins!
