Let’s Sew for Babies! Day 2: NFP

Today we went to the Nurse Family Partnership and visited with team leaders for certain divisions. We heard from the two lawyers, Stephanie and Rachel. They talked about how they help people who were kicked out of their homes, who do not have a dependable work schedule and help them get government support. We learned about both the uniqueness of this partnership, but also the legal side and the real goal of the partnership. Additionally we were told about the two programs: one in which they stick with the mother and baby until the baby is two years old and the other where they stay with the baby until they are five years old.

We toured the building and did different exercises to understand the goal of prioritizing the client and how certain people are more at risk than others. During the tour we learned that the organization gives toys when appropriate, like a stacking toy when the baby turns six months old, and how they give books to the mothers to help the babies develop. We were taught the difference between equality, equity, and justice, and how to understand the needs of each person and what is holding them back is one of the most important parts, so that the organization can know the best way to help.

We also learned of exactly what the nurses do and are capable of doing to help their clients. We watched a video which showed nurses in homes helping not only the baby but also the mother. Lastly, we stopped at WaWa on the way back to school for lunch. 🙂
