We started our first full day in Washington, D.C. by taking a walking tour of Logan Circle. This is where Washington D.C. all began. We learned about city planning, history, and gentrification. We saw the beautiful buildings and houses and learned about their history.
Next, we spent several hours exploring the National Museum of African American History and Culture. We learned about the lives, culture, and history of Black Americans, including many topics, like sports, music, theatre, scientific contributions by Black Americans, and more. We also learned about racism, slavery, segregation, and civil rights.
At the museum, we got to eat at the Sweet Home Cafe, where we had a wonderful meal of some great American dishes. Some of the favorites were Mac & Cheese, Collard Greens, Fried Chicken, and Banana Pudding.
Lastly, we toured the entire mall visiting the Washington Monument, the World War II Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Thomas Jefferson Memorial. We learned about the differences between each of them and talked about why these people and events are being remembered.
