Shalom, Philly! Multicultural Philly’s Jewish History Tour

Today we took a tour of “The Lost Jewish Quarter of Philadelphia” given to us by Jerry. We learned about the first Jewish cemetery in Philadelphia and how it was moved around the city over time. We passed Pennsylvania Hospital and learned how it expanded and improved its technology. An interesting fact from this part of the tour was how operating rooms were put on the top floor to receive sunlight before there was electricity. We also passed the Rebecca Gratz house which helped women immigrants have a place to live and build a foundation for their lives. We learned about Isaiah Zagar and how he created many murals and collages to symbolize different things in the community. We met Mrs. Galler’s parents and saw the Jewish deli started by Mrs. Galler’s grandfather. Mrs. Galler’s dad talked to us about the way that the fabric stores and pushcarts used to run on Fourth Street, also known as “Fabric Row.” For lunch, we went to South Street and visited restaurants and shops in the area.
