On Tuesday we left London behind and made a two-and-a-half hour drive to Shakespeare’s birth (and death) place, Stratford-on-Avon. We stopped first at his wife, Anne Hathaway’s beautifully preserved cottage and gardens. Once in town we broke for lunch and then toured the home where Shakespeare was born and lived for many years. We took a walking tour that ended at Shakespeare’s grave. Strange to be standing in a room with the Bard! Well, most of him — recent scans of the grave led to the discovery that his skull is missing. Perhaps it’s being used somewhere in a production of Hamlet? Speaking of productions, we capped off the night with a performance of Julius Caesar by the Royal Shakespeare Company in their beautiful theatre space.
