Art to Aardvarks: A Visit to Taller Puertorriqueño

IMG_0978Today we went to Taller Puertorriqueño, a Puerto Rican community workshop, where we saw some art exhibits made by Puerto Rican artists. We ate at a restaurant called Vivaldi Restaurant. We also got salsa dancing lessons.  Alex learned salsa dancing and was very good at it!

IMG_0983Today we visited the Latino community of Philadelphia. We started today looking at some Latino art sculptures and murals. The hidden symbols of migration and oppression and meanings these murals held were the most interesting part of the art.  Later we learned salsa dance from two salsa experts. As someone who has never danced before it was very challenging, nonetheless I enjoyed myself. Later we ate some traditional Latino cuisine before heading home on this cold day.

Taller Puertorriqueño is a student outreach program that explores art from the core of European, African, Caribbean and Latino cultures. They have art galleries for many Latin artists and they organize a range of cultural education programs. For almost four decades they have been preserving Puerto Rican and Latino culture through their arts and cultural programs. Taller has grown from a small workshop into a large arts organization that has touched many people throughout its existence.

IMG_0970We saw some very interesting art that expressed different cultures and ethnicities of the people of Philadelphia. They were all created differently and showed the artist’s very different emotions. Later, we went salsa dancing and learned the basics of the dance. We all had a great time and learned a new style of dancing. Finally we had an amazing lunch at Vivaldi for some authentic Hispanic food. We all had a awesome day and can’t wait until tomorrow!

Today we went to Taller Puertorriqueño in Philadelphia. Taller Puertorriqueño is really a beautiful site containing many works of art from Hispanic countries. It was cool to see because the art was very unique. The murals made this part of town very lively and unique.

We also got to learn how to salsa dance, and we learned a lot about dancing and culture.

After the lesson, we had the opportunity to try authentic Puerto Rican food at a cozy restaurant in town. The food was delicious.
