We had a busy day in Low and Slow today, preparing for our feast on Friday, cooking more food, and beginning to clean up for the end of IL. We started by uncovering the pit, which we had covered with plywood and dirt the day before, and took out the lamb, which smelled delicious after cooking all night. Then, we split up into different tasks, including cleaning the areas we’ve been cooking in and preparing dishes for our final feast with staff on Friday.
After a week of chopping wood and cooking, cleaning up was pretty difficult, especially carrying all the extra firewood back inside, but we got it done so next year’s Low and Slow group will be well prepared. After completing these strenuous tasks, some of us began preparing food for the feast, including dishes like mac and cheese.
“All in all, Friday’s feast is going to be SPECTACULAR” said Connor.

Once we finished cleaning and prepping, we made lunch by cooking corn tortillas, which smelled and tasted delicious, and splitting the lamb. Through our prep, we had an incredible lunch with our corn tortillas, pulled lamb, and two types of salsa, one sweet and one spicy. As we enjoyed a delicious meal and bonded over the food we had cooked together, we played games like impostor and charades. Although we may not have thought about it in the moment, experiences like these help you appreciate the care and effort that go into making food.

Finally, after lunch, we prepared buttermilk biscuits by rolling them out and using cutters to shape them. Dan taught us to pull the cutters straight out instead of twisting them to allow the biscuits to stay fluffy. We also filled the pit using the dirt we had taken out of it before.
