Blacksmithing, Day Two — Using the forges & learning to make fires (and to keep them going!)

Today was our first day using the forges for blacksmithing and our second day of blacksmithing. First, we brought out the forges we had built on Friday, along with out tools and set them up at the end of the fields. We then filled our boxes with sand and started building our fires. Everyone learned a few lessons about starting fires and how to keep them going; none of us really had a good fire going until a couple hours in. A few people helped set up a generator to help us power the hair dryers which helped with getting enough oxygen to our fires. A few people got to shape pieces of metal, mainly for the task of getting to understand the way in which the metal bends as we had learned that it isn’t really soft and moldable in the way other materials might be. At the end of the day, we shared with everyone the things that we learned and things we should continue doing and the things that we should stop. We also brainstormed what we would do on Thursday as there is some inclement weather on the forecast. We are very excited to see what tomorrow has in store for us in blacksmithing.
