Chinese Culture: Day 1

We began the day with a lesson on traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture. We had a special visitor named 钟医生 (Dr. Zhong) who taught us the background history of Chinese medicine. After the lesson, it was time for everybody to have a little fun, so Dr. Zhong began to demonstrate. She began by asking if any of the students wanted to try having a needle in their arm, which most of the brave students in the class did. Secondly, Dr. Zhong showed us how cupping works, by lighting fire into a suction cup and sticking it to the skin. This applies a lot of pressure. While acupuncture produces endorphins, cupping “makes you feel like a feather” says 李老师 (Li lao shi).

At 10:30 we boarded our bus that took us into Chinatown which was the main part of our day. In Chinatown, we learned about ancient Buddhism in a Buddhist temple, got to eat a Dim Sum meal, and walked around the town shopping and talking to people. Lastly we got to visit an underground Chinese food market, getting a real taste of the Chinese culture. We can’t wait for next week!

Yum, Dim Sum!
