Day One of Quilting for Alzheimer’s

After diving into the rigorous yet intriguing waters of quilting, I can say with confidence that this is going to be one of the best Intensive Learnings. The day began with a lesson in the history of quilts, how it was a pastime for many women of the 19th century (this was obviously quilting and sewing by hand since there were no machines) and how these women started their own trends to show off their talents.

Mrs. Casne, teacher of this Intensive Learning, brought in her friend Delia, who showed us some of her quilts and also some tricks of the trade. Once we learned the basics (a.k.a. how to use a sewing machine) we began making our own pin cushions. We cut out different pieces of two inch fabrics to layer, creating beautiful designs with very ornate fabrics. Lunch was shortly after beginning these cushions; we went uptown to get some pizza.

Once we returned after our meal, we finished up our cushions, stuffing them with cotton and sewing them and our day came to an end.
