Folk Art: Basket Cases!

Here’s what some of our group had to say about our third day of Folk Art & Living Simply …

We used natural dyes to create imprints of flower petals and leaves. I used the red cabbage dye, hibiscus dye, and salt to create my patterns. I also used batteries to flatten some of my flowers down so they dry properly.

I wove a basket! It was a little bit hard at first, but when I got the hang of it it was really fun. I’m happy I made something that I am able to use.

Day Three was like Chemistry class. I mortar and pestled plaster to make a glaze for pottery.

In the morning we started with flower printing where we used our self-made dye and put flowers or leaves on piece of paper. It was fun and turned out really pretty. After lunch we started to make baskets out of wooden strings.

We started by getting a demonstration on leaf printing with Ms. W, and we then experimented with the dyes we made on watercolor paper. Later we started making baskets out of wooden reeds. To finish the day, some people made more macrame keychains.

Today was unexpectedly challenging because of the basket weaving. When it didn’t come together how I expected it to I panicked, but I trust that with patience it will come together. I really enjoyed seeing how all the different thing used to create dyes came together in the end.

In the morning I made flower art, and then I made another macrame chain thing for my friend, which was good because I lost my last one. Then I made a basket plate!
