Folk Art: Macramé Madness!

The Folk Art Intensive Learning group had a great second day. From learning new skills like macramé and exploring new combinations of mediums, the group had a day full of exploration and experimentation.

We started the day off by unloading new materials for the week in preparation for the coming days, which included fire pit materials, weaving materials, and more. Once we settled in, we started by learning two basic macramé knots and creating two keychains. Once everyone mastered those knots we had the rest of the morning to explore on our own, try more knot types, and make our own projects ranging from pot hangers, wall hangings, and more keychains.

After lunch, we watched a demonstration led by Tara Wosiski (LS Art Teacher) on how to create a watercolor painting using salt, watercolor, and flowers. After we picked out our flower petals and leaves we were able to experiment with colors, different volumes of water, and different amounts of salt to create an interesting project that prints the negative image of a flower or leaves onto the paper. We finished the day by preparing bases — vines, twine, and even pine needles — for baskets we plan to make tomorrow!

Stay tuned for tomorrow, when we head outside for the pit-firing of our clay pots!
