Glass Art Intensive Learning Day #1

Today was the first day of the Glass Art Intensive Learning.

We got to school at 8:00 AM and then left to Wheaton Arts at 8:45. During that 45 minute time everyone made friendship bracelets and I personally learned how too. The bus drive was about an hour.

When we got there we were greeted by Kenneth Leap, the glass art instructor. He was very friendly and we started off the day with a fun activity — “The Exquisite Corpse.” Everyone was handed a piece of paper and a pencil. We then had to fold the pieces of paper in thirds and draw some sort of head on the top portion. Then everyone swapped papers and someone else would draw the torso and then someone else would draw the legs. At the end of the activity everyone looked pretty wacky.

Then we learned how to mat the glass and we all helped out by either drying or stippling the mat or stippling. Then after we had the mat fully dried on the glass, everyone took their original head drawing and trace painted it out on the 4×6 piece of mat glass. After the painting, we used a dry brush to scrape away any of the mat or glass paint that we didn’t want.

After that we cleaned up for 15 minutes and then completed our trip back to MFS. Then the last 45 minutes of the day we learned about and made glass jewelry. Overall it was a very fun and active day and I can’t wait for the next day at Wheaton Arts.

We played “Exquisite Corpse” to warm up our creative minds (and to ensure we had something to paint on glass).
Rachel & Gianna show off their glass paintings.
Marcella’s awesome bird glass painting.
A glass painting includes a matt background, glass paint, and scratched off white space.
Jessie puts the finishing touches on the background of her glass painting.
Griffin, Rebecca and Maddie are hard at work on their glass paintings.
Our glass paintings at the end of the day. They’re off to the kiln to be fired before we add Tiffany Glass borders on Tuesday!
