On the first day of 2024 Growing For Good Intensive Learning, the Upper Schoolers joined with the fifth graders to do service at both Swedes Run and the Esther Yanai Preserve Trail. At Swedes Run, we split into two groups: one group carried and spread mulch to the flower beds, and the other removed weeds. The first group discovered the process of spreading and breaking down mulch and also discovered the different kinds of bugs that resided in the mulch. The second group cut some of the longer weeds and dead flowers from the garden to make room for new ones. As a whole, we also learned about the different kinds of birds and butterflies that flew over the area.

Then, we returned back to school for lunch and some recess with our new fifth grade friends. At around 12:30, we went to the Esther Yanai trail to learn about the different kinds of native and invasive plants in the area. We took around a 45-minute walk through the preserve and learned about things, such as birds and trees, along the way. Both of these trips, along with the help of the fifth grade class, allowed us to learn more about the different kinds of plants and animals in our area that help benefit the environment.
