Improv With Issues: Education & Sculptures

Today we tackled the first of several social issues we’ll explore this week: HIV/AIDS. After focusing with a warm up and activities, we clarified our knowledge about HIV/AIDS, including the history of the pandemic in the U.S. and the world. We watched the movie Philadelphia and gained an understanding of the prejudice surrounding HIV and the stigmatization that people suffering from HIV undergo. After drying our tears, we spent the afternoon exploring physical ways to represent ideas and emotions related to HIV/AIDS. We created living “sculptures” and watched the sculptures, created by our own bodies, transform based on each individual sculptor’s interpretation of the word.
