Overcoming Challenges

Our day was filled with many interesting and exciting Design Thinking activities!!! First, we put the final touches on our improved prototype from yesterday so that they were ready to be seen by others within the community. We placed them in Stokes Hall in order to receive feedback protocol from people outside of the classroom. Afterwards, we played “Go Find It,” where students were given five cards with one-word descriptions. We went around the campus to find objects that fit the descriptions. Then, we put our architectural skills to the test by building with fifteen pipe cleaners (with certain constraints, such as using only one hand or not being able to speak) to see which group could have the highest free-standing tower.

With the idea of constraints and roadblocks in mind, we then began to make new solutions to address our central problems as well as do research to back up the feasibility of the solutions. After lunch, we played a game of Knockout to see which student could reign victorious. Underclassmen reigned supreme (obviously). To close off the day, we used the “Story Arc” to make short video stories to demonstrate the vision for our new ideas and solutions and presented them to the class. Oscar winning masterpieces, I’d say. Tomorrow, we will look at the feedback to better our projects even more. We will then have to decide how to proceed: will we keep our original ideas, continue with our second idea, or form a new solution by combining elements from both of our prototype design solutions?
