Our favorite part of today is the feeling of knowing that we were helping people and making a better space for other people who enjoy the lake! We are all so ready to enjoy a few days of fun together at camp this week!

Today the fifth graders went to Strawbridge Lake for our day of service! Although the day was rainy and cold, we bundled up in coats and boots and boarded the bus. When we got there, we met up with George, who took half of us to pull weeds around the garden beds. We learned how to tell the difference between flowers and weeds.
Mr. Brad led the other group around the lake and pointed out different trees and taught us how to identify them. As part of a larger project, we are making wooden signs shaped like leaves. Then, we are labeling them with the name of the tree species so that people who walk around the lake will know which trees are growing there! Some examples of trees we saw today are the European Larch, the Japanese Maple, and the Weeping Willow!
We also worked in the pollinator garden, carefully pruning perennial plants and pulling invasive weeds, like clover and dandelion. It’s important to actually look at what you’re pulling out to protect your plants so the weeds don’t crowd out the native plants! In addition to taking care of the space, we also saw lots of wildlife, like ducks and geese. We discovered and observed friendly Milkweed Bugs and earthworms in the pollinator garden.
When we came back to school, we changed into dry clothes, washed up, and ate lunch. After eating and refilling our energy tanks, we ran around the Red Gym for an extra long recess!
Then, we returned to Teacher Kelly’s room to reflect. Mrs. Kinney led us through a relaxing yoga routine and gratitude meditation. Then, we spent time quietly journaling about our experience and thinking about our day.
We concluded our day with Meeting for Worship, where we shared messages that expressed our thoughts and feelings about the day. Our favorite part of today is the feeling of knowing that we were helping people and making a better space for other people who enjoy the lake! We are all so ready to enjoy a few days of fun together at camp this week!
