SJ Service: Origami and compost and closets, oh my!

Today SJ Service went to Perkins Center for the Arts in Moorestown, NJ. We helped them with gardening and organizing for their summer camps. For the gardening, we first made some compost bins using chicken wire.  Next, we made origami boxes using old newspaper.  We put soil and vegetable seeds in these boxes as pots for them to grow until they are big enough to be put in the garden.  The newspaper will decompose in the soil later. We also helped clean out their walk-in art closet. It was filled with an assortment of art donations, ranging from buttons and beads to fabrics and felts. We stacked the paper by color and put the fabric in bins. While we waited to clean out a new section, we played games to pass the time. In the end, we successfully reorganized a walk-in art closet, planted a garden, and had a very good first day of Intensive Learning.
