Solar Energy, Day Five — Building our parabolic oven, and a visit from first grade

Today, we used our petal template to make 18 cardboard petals with sides 20 degrees apart and curved to match our parabolic equation. This took all morning without a break so we took a long lunch. After lunch we were visited by the first grade classes to talk about robots and our Solar Energy Intensive Learning projects. They were full of great questions and liked the cookies that were baking in our solar ovens.

Once the first graders left, we resumed work on the parabolic oven. While it was time-consuming and difficult, we were able to glue mylar sheets to each petal. We currently have 5/9th of the parabolic petals attached together. Tomorrow we finish the build.

Oreo Update:

Today, we tried three new Oreo flavors! First was the Dark Chocolate Oreo, which, although tasted good, was not a favorite of any student of our IL, so it received an overall 6/10. Next were the Golden Oreos, which were not likeable at all. One student didn’t bother to retaste them. We gave it a 2/10.

Lastly, we tried a very unique type of Oreo. While not a different flavor, they were an interesting twist of the original with a chocolate covered wafer. It got a respectable 7/10.

Stay tuned for tomorrow’s last and most epic Oreo Update along with final rankings!
