The Ring of Kerry

Today was the 3rd day of our European adventure, and it couldn’t have been more jammed pack full of unique excursions and little surprises!

To begin our day, we hopped on a bus for a tour of The Ring of Kerry (which lasted all day!!). For our first major stop, we visited The Fox Inn where we saw a recreation of an old village with live animals. This stop gave us the chance to get a better understanding of what life used to be like for Irish people living in small villages with their families and livestock. Along the way, we stopped at a couple locations to take advantage of the beautiful scenery (and for lots of pictures). We went to an adorable little town where we saw a man and his awesome goat, and we even got some ice cream at a local shop.

For our next major stop, we got lunch at a restaurant called the Scarriff Inn, which overlooked the water and the mountains. In this area, we stopped to take a picture of an island where Star Wars was filmed!! Afterwards, we got to visit a sheep farm, which was amazing. Here, we watched as a trainer used a whistle and special commands to get his sheep dog to herd the sheep. These dogs can take up to two years to train and are very intelligent!! We also got to hold baby sheep and play with a couple sheep dogs.

To wrap up our incredible day, we took a hike up a beautiful trail to look at a waterfall, which was followed by a stop at a castle before we went back to our hotel. This castle, while seemingly a normal “castle” to us, was actually something in between what they would call a castle and a fort here in Ireland. Tomorrow, we will learn more about the differences between castle, forts, and the in-betweens as we travel from Killarney to Dublin!
