We started the day off with an early morning 7:30 a.m. shift. All of us were in the same area this time, and we spent the shift assisting kids with horse rides. A lot of us got to walk alongside the horses Buddy and Austin to help the kids keep balance. The rest of the group helped with preparing the kids, helping them mount horses, keeping the kids safely away from horses when they weren’t riding, and helping the parents with signing waivers. Some of the children were excited to be on the horse, while others were very apprehensive. However, those who were apprehensive quickly relaxed and smiled as they rode.
Coming back to the house in between shifts, we took some time to relax. Some relaxed in the sun and the pool, taking advantage of the amazing Florida weather, but we all ended up playing tons of different card games.
We ended the day by returning to GKtW for a dinner shift at Cafe Clayton, participating in various positions. A few of us got to serve pizza and various hot foods, while others handled drinks and trays.
By now, all of us have become integrated and connected with the community: making connections with other volunteers from different areas of the country and becoming familiar with some of the families staying there.
Tomorrow after our morning shift, we will be doing goat yoga (a volunteer appreciation surprise activity) and visiting Disney Springs to spend some time shopping and looking around, which will be super fun and exciting. In the evening, we will end our week of service at GKtW helping throw Mayor Clayton’s Birthday Bash.
