Yeast, and Bread, and Scones, Oh My!

At the start of the day, the contestants were briefed on what yeast is and how it works. The contestants then moved out to the kitchen and began baking bread from scratch. They made mixtures of salt and flour and of water, molasses, and yeast, and then combined the mixtures into a dough. When the bread was done baking, students sliced and buttered it, making a simple but delicious treat. 

After lunch, the contestants packed up their supplies and newly-baked bread. They then went to the Pie Lady, experiencing a visual demonstration of how to make the batter for blueberry lemon scones. Students helped form the scones and put them on the pan. They then had a tour of the Pie Lady kitchen and were given free scones to take with them.
