Bogs, Berries and Jersey Devils

IMG_3271To  start off our day we visited the Pine Island Cranberry Co..  We learned a lot about the art of growing and harvesting cranberries. Mr. Haines and his son, daughter, and Christina gave us a lovely tour of the property. We learned about the selective breeding of cranberries, the fungi that can infect them and how they are processed and marketed. We also learned about how essential water quality is to cranberry growing, and how much the company does to protect this natural resource. We got to see a burnt bog, in addition to one that had just been drained and had cranberries growing in it.

Afterwards, we went to the Batona Camping Area and saw a memorial to Emilio Carranza. He was a Mexican aviator who crashed in the woods during a goodwill flight from Mexico City to the United States. Then we went deeper into the woods and split off into groups to film a short video about the Jersey Devil. Then we came back to school.
