China: A Hot Pot Birthday

photo 3After a nice flight from Beijing to Chengdu, we checked into Sim’s Cozy Hostel.  Once we checked in we went and got dinner, which was a classic Sichuan Hot Pot dinner.  This meal uses boiled sauces and creates a “make your own” dinner approach.  There are two sides to the pot.  There was a spicy side and a regular side.  It required a lot of skill and attention.  You start off with raw meats, fish, and vegetables and throw it all in the side you would like to eat from.  After you feel the meat has been cooked, you take it out and eat it.  But be careful, because the food coming out is temperature hot, and you have to be careful not to burn yourself (which several people did).

Today also happened to be Elyse’s birthday and we had a nice celebration.  Everyone, especially Elyse was particularly surprised  by the good old USA fries and cake.  It was a great ending to a great day.
