Good for the Soil, Good for the Soul

Today we went to the Perkins Center for the Arts to help out in the garden. First, we split up into four groups and set to work weeding the raised flower beds. Under the grey overcast sky, we tilled the soil and planted all types of vegetables and herbs. Then we cleaned up the grounds, raking up the leaves and trimming the shrubs. After we finished cleaning up the garden and getting it ready for spring, we went inside for a well-deserved lunch of pizza and buffalo wings.

After lunch, we had some time to frolic about in the warm spring sunshine. During this time of recreational frolicking, a series of unfortunate events took place. Not one, but two frisbees got stuck in the large pine tree. Luckily, a strong young man by the name of Jackson heroically stepped in to attempt to dislodge the frisbees. In a valiant attempt to serve the community, he broke ’em. He hurled a rock straight through not one, but both of the frisbees.

After the frisbee fiasco, we artfully crafted little origami newspaper pots to start seedlings in. Then we planted seeds in said pots and sat in the garden soaking up the bountiful rays of sun. Today was an incredible ending to an even  more incredible week. South Jersey Service IL was an experience we will never forget.
