Nicaragua: Sharing soccer, strength, skills

This morning we went to the Casa Del Niños art school. We did many different service projects, such as painting beams, shoveling old footings so that new foundation can be put down, cutting rebar, and then making them into squares for rebar foundations.

Then we went to a women’s craft collective. There we learned the process of making paper. First they soak paper in water, then the women rip the paper and put it into a 4 gallon bucket in water and let it sit for two days. After they put the paper into a bucket with fibers they take a frame and let the water soak out. Then they press the water out of the paper. They had many interesting pieces of paper art.

Next we went to Artesanias Mujeres del Promo. Here we learned about how four women make bracelets for their business. We learned that they use many seeds. Next, we made some bracelets and bought different beautiful jewelry pieces from their store.

We also started a pickup game of soccer with some kids outside the shop. It started with kicking a bottle around with 2 kids and developed into a full-fledged soccer game. After kicking the bottle around for 5 minutes one kid got a beat up white soccer ball for us to play with. We set up goals in the street we were playing in. We used big rocks to mark the goals. The soccer game lasted for 30 minutes and had its highlight when Jeremiah scored a goal, along with Brad and Mr. Webster. Unfortunately Mr. Webster cut himself on the barbed wire fence lining the side street. He carried on and went right back into the game. You could say he was a trooper.

After the game we went back to the hotel and relaxed the rest of the day by chilling in hammocks and reminiscing about the day.
