Pine Barrens, Day Three — Carranza Memorial, Apple Pie Hill, & ice cream!

On our journey in the Pine Barrens, we went to Apple Pie Hill. Our first stop when we got off the bus was the Carranza Memorial, which was built in honor of Captain Emilio Carranza Rodriguez.  He was an aviator that is known today as a symbol of peace for Americans and Mexicans.  Therefore, children of Mexico collected money to have stone from Coahuila exported to the Pine Barrens in order to create this memorial in 1931!  Then, we walked for (presumably) 4.1 miles to Apple Pie Hill, where a fire tower resides.

On the Batona (BAck TO NAture) Trail on the way to Apple Pie Hill

The reason why Apple Pie Hill is named that way is lost in history, but the tower is still used today; one is able to see as far as Atlantic City and Philadelphia from the top.  Afterwards, we walked about a mile to the edge of our trail and stopped on our way home at Evergreen Dairy Bar, intending to get ice cream!  Some people chose to get real food instead, but at the end of the day, we were all satisfied with our trip!
